Rhiana's Picks

Rhiana is an elusive creature. She works at Northtown Books on Sundays and dedicates the rest of her time to the study of botany. It's well known that she enjoys taxonomic identification as much as lollypops and mochas.

One of my favorite authors. Each of her novels is a time machine. This is the first in a series of books following the history of an Ojibwe family through several generations. Erdrich's writing elegantly and carefully illustrates the people, as well as the setting and the emotions each convey. Once you turn the last page you'll clasp the book to your heart and reach for the next in the series, The Beet Queen.

This classic was recommended to me under the guise that Milan Kundera's prose was similar to that of Haruki Murakami. It is. The main difference is that Kundera's introspective dreamworld is set in communist Prague, 1968, not Japan. Each psyche in this love quadrangle articulates sexuality, and mental escape from an authoritarian political environment.
